Navalny Arrested Upon Arrival at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow
Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny, who had been wanted in Russia since December 29, was arrested upon his return to Moscow. According to the TASS agency, he was apprehended at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport, where he had just arrived from Berlin.
It has been reported that Navalny was wanted for multiple violations of the terms of his conditional sentence. A court will decide on the further measures against him. Until the court's decision, Navalny will remain in custody.
The Russian Federal Penitentiary Service had announced its intention to arrest Navalny when he expressed his desire to return to Russia. It is recalled that Navalny had been transferred to Germany for medical treatment after his health deteriorated on a flight from Tomsk to Omsk on August 20, leading to his hospitalization in an Omsk hospital. Two days later, he was flown to a hospital in Berlin, where specialists claimed he had been poisoned.
Prior to this, two conditional sentences had been issued against Navalny for embezzlement of over 30 million rubles and wasting 16 million rubles.
