European Union to Impose Sanctions on Belarus

The European Union has decided to impose sanctions on Belarus for human rights violations. This was reported by sources from TASS.

The foreign ministers of the 27 EU member states will take measures against officials of the republic. They will first address those responsible for the application of "violence" and for the violations of human rights against Belarusian citizens.

“There is a consensus. A political decision has been made regarding the imposition of sanctions,” said a source from one of the delegations.

Earlier, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen called for sanctions against Minsk. She expressed confidence that the debate among the EU foreign ministers would provide “strong support for civil liberties and democracy in Belarus.”

On the evening of August 9, protests began across Belarus in response to residents' dissatisfaction with the presidential election results. Clashes commenced in central Minsk with OMON forces. The rallies were suppressed using tear gas, stun grenades, and smoke bombs.
