Video: Trump Interrupts Press Conference Due to Nearby Shooting
During a press briefing on Monday, the U.S. Secret Service suddenly evacuated President Donald Trump from the White House press center due to gunshots heard nearby, Reuters reports.
A few minutes later, Donald Trump returned and announced that security forces had fired upon an armed individual who was subsequently hospitalized. The U.S. President indicated that, as he understood, the suspect was armed.
He added that the gunfire occurred near the White House fence, right at the edge of the building. The U.S. Secret Service later stated that the White House was not damaged during the incident and that no one under the protection of the Secret Service was in danger.
On its Twitter page, the agency reported that it is investigating the shooting involving a Secret Service officer. Both the man and the Secret Service officer have been hospitalized.
It is noteworthy that just before Trump's sudden departure from the briefing, the doors to the press center had been closed. The President confirmed that there were no other casualties as a result of the gunfire. He praised the response of the Secret Service to the incident and noted that the agency would provide details later.
“There are no details yet. We just discovered this,” Trump told reporters.
