Is the Prime Minister Aware? Hrant Bagratyan
Economist Hrant Bagratyan wrote on his Facebook page: “A moment ago, Prime Minister N.P. made a post stating that one of the commercial banks of Armenia has raised 300 million at 6.5%. He attributed this to the successes of the government and considered this 300 million as an investment. To be honest, I do not intend to provide economic explanations. I am simply astonished. Is he aware of negative interest rates? Is he informed about the massive decline in interest rates in the credit resource market over the last 2-3 years? Does he know that the primary lever for the stagnating Western economy has been the printing of money? Is he aware that the most common euro bonds are at 0-1%? Does he know that in the West some short-term securities are more expensive than long-term ones? Does he realize that such arrangements will comparatively appreciate the currency and does he understand that this ordinary banking operation has nothing to do with investments? Ultimately, is he aware that 7 months ago, Georgian TBC allocated those same funds at 5.75%, and in 2014, issued an IPO on the London Stock Exchange, allocating 640 million (now that was an investment).
p.s. My statement is not intended to belittle the bank. This is a serious and successful step (I sincerely congratulate) towards the financial entrepreneurship of the Georgians.”
