Billionaire Ronald Lauder, who has been one of the key financial backers of New York’s Republicans for decades, has sharply reduced his political activity and has not made any donations to state Republican candidates this year so far, according to The New York Times.

Lauder, the 82-year-old heir to the Estée Lauder cosmetics empire and a well-known philanthropist, has actively funded conservative initiatives for decades. He personally supported the campaign for term limits in New York, participated in funding lawsuits against the state's redistricting map, and in 2022 directed nearly $13 million to campaigns that helped Republicans gain a majority in the House of Representatives.

Now, his super PAC political committee, which has supported Republican candidates and initiatives for years, has been rendered inactive. In addition, Lauder has let go of several advisors, advertising specialists, and other staff members, many of whom had worked with him for decades.

The reasons for this decision remain somewhat unclear. Three individuals familiar with the situation have said Lauder has mentioned to them his adult children's attempts to reduce his extensive spending on politics, art, and charity. They also pointed to the sharp decline in the value of his stake in the family business: Estée Lauder’s shares have lost about 77% since their peak in 2021, resulting in a decrease of at least $1.2 billion in the value of his stake.

Meanwhile, a person close to the Lauder family told the NYT that the reduction in political spending is not related to a lack of funds. According to this source, Lauder and his children have agreed to simplify his operational structure, reduce travel, staff, and public appearances, so he can focus on arts and charity projects that will preserve his legacy in his later years.

Lauder himself did not respond to the publication's detailed questions about his financial situation and the reasons behind his decisions. In a written statement, he noted that for many years he has used political donations and philanthropy to strengthen New York and intends to continue dedicating his time and resources to the city's development.

Republicans still hope that the billionaire might participate in the current election campaign. However, Gerard Casara, president of the New York Conservative Party, stated that, according to information from Lauder's former longtime aide, the billionaire and his family have decided that he will no longer be as actively involved in politics.

“Can anyone financially replace him in New York? The simple answer is no,” said Casara.

Despite the reduction in political activity, Lauder remains an extremely wealthy man. He owns one of the largest private collections of artworks, a Gulfstream private jet, and real estate in Palm Beach and the Hamptons. Forbes estimates that Lauder and each of his two adult daughters are worth billions.

At the same time, Lauder is taking steps that could have implications far removed from politics. In particular, he has stepped down from his position on the board of directors of Estée Lauder, and in May announced the merger of his New York Neue Galerie museum with the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
