This is a Historic Decision for Turkey as Well: Turkish Genocide Scholar
Prominent Turkish historian and genocide scholar Taner Akçam shared his thoughts on social media following the U.S. Senate's decision to recognize and condemn the Armenian Genocide, as reported by ermenihaber.
Along with the publication, Akçam commented: "After the U.S. Congress, the Senate has also unanimously passed the resolution on the Armenian Genocide. This is a historic decision. This could be a turning point not only for Armenians, but for all of humanity in Turkey as well.
Some places report that the decision still needs to be forwarded for approval and similar things. However, this is not a decision subject to approval. Two of the three important pillars of the U.S. government, Congress and the Senate, have already recognized the Genocide. Even if Trump does not officially use the term genocide, legally we can already say that the U.S. has recognized the Armenian Genocide.
The recognition of the Genocide by the U.S. differs from the recognition by other countries. It can be expected that in U.S. courts, one after another, lawsuits will be filed, which will create significant headaches for Turkey. Let’s see how Turkey will respond."
