Driver Arrested in Zod Bridge Tragic Accident Provides Testimony and Details
The driver arrested in the tragic accident on the Zod Bridge, Soghomon Hakobyan, has given testimony revealing details of the incident. He stated that his legs were broken after the crash and that he witnessed quite a bit while seated in that condition. He mentioned that the fire was very small and it was evidently possible to assist the passengers of the 'Gazelle' vehicle.
This was reported by Hakobyan's defense attorney, Seda Safaryan, in an interview with "Haykakan Zhamanak".
The tragic accident occurred on July 6 this year on the 54th kilometer of the Yerevan-Meghri highway, on Zod Bridge in Ararat province, where vehicles including a 'Gazelle', a 'Toyota Hilux', and a 'VAZ 21063' collided, resulting in a fire.
According to Seda Safaryan, the lawyer for 'Gazelle' driver Soghomon Hakobyan, there are no new developments, but they have gathered numerous pieces of evidence to understand why such a situation arose after the accident. She noted that a fire broke out well after the collision, and that deaths were not directly due to the crash itself. They have made inquiries and requested documentation from the fire service about when they arrived, what actions were taken, and why such extensive damage occurred, as there are substantial documents at their disposal that leave many questions unresolved regarding various circumstances.
The pre-trial investigation body has not taken any measures to work on this issue either. Safaryan believes that charges under Article 244, part 3 (leaving the scene of a traffic accident) could not be brought against him, as it has not yet been established what caused the fatalities. Hakobyan has testified and stated that he had broken legs after the accident, saw quite a few things while in that state, and claimed that the fire was very small, implying that it was possible to help the passengers of the 'Gazelle'.
"I cannot understand why no practical measures were taken to quickly evacuate people. Therefore, what happened afterwards should become the subject of investigation to understand what actually occurred," she emphasized.
