World Council of Churches Expresses Concern Over the Situation Around the Armenian Apostolic Church

The World Council of Churches (WCC) has expressed concern regarding the developments surrounding the Armenian Apostolic Church in Armenia.

In a statement by the organization’s General Secretary, the Rev. Professor Jerry Pillay, it was noted that reports of law enforcement actions at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and the arrests of senior clergy have raised alarms.

The WCC emphasized the important role of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the spiritual, cultural, and historical life of the Armenian people, as well as in the global Christian community.

The organization has raised questions regarding religious freedom, the inviolability of places of worship, and the autonomy of church structures, in light of reports involving the use of force in sacred places and the arrest of clergymen.

The WCC also pointed out that harsh public rhetoric could deepen internal disagreements.

The organization has called upon the authorities in Armenia to ensure the rights of religious leaders and institutions, maintain proper legal procedures, and avoid actions or statements that could be perceived as targeting religious entities.

Furthermore, the World Council of Churches urged state bodies and religious communities to engage in open and constructive dialogue, highlighting the importance of mutual respect.
