UK Sports Minister to Raise Mkhitaryan Issue at UEFA
The situation surrounding Armenian midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan of Arsenal has drawn criticism in the UK Parliament.
Tom Watson, deputy leader of the Labour Party, stated in his speech: “Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Arsenal fans with Armenian surnames will miss the Europa League final because they have ties to Armenia. This is the dirty side of a beautiful game. If I were the foreign minister, I would appeal to UEFA, declaring that this is unacceptable,” said Watson.
It is worth noting that Mkhitaryan will not be attending the Europa League final against Chelsea, as it is taking place in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
According to Watson, this incident can be considered a scandal, as UEFA's regulations state that all players have equal rights.
Additionally, UK Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Jeremy Wright has announced that he will raise the issue at UEFA.
