EU Allocates €6.1 Billion in Arms for Ukraine

The European Commission approved new defense procurement worth €6.1 billion for Ukraine on August 24. The funds will be allocated as part of the European Union's €90 billion credit program designated for Ukraine.

The resources will be directed towards the acquisition of air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radar stations. These new purchases complement previously approved programs amounting to €16 billion, of which €8.35 billion has already been allocated to Ukraine under the defense component of the €90 billion support package.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that this armament is urgently needed for Ukraine to protect its population and airspace. Most of the procurements are expected to be carried out through EU defense companies. The European Commission also considers it necessary to ramp up supplies in light of Russia's active use of ballistic missiles and drones with jet engines.

By the end of 2026, the European Union plans to transfer an additional approximately €20 billion to Ukraine.
