Procedures for Granting and Revoking Citizenship to Be Reviewed

On August 22, a working discussion was held under the leadership of Minister of Internal Affairs Arpine Sargsyan regarding amendments to the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Armenia. The Ministry of Internal Affairs reports that participating in the meeting were Acting Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Armen Ghazaryan, Acting Head of the Migration and Citizenship Service Nelli Davtyan, and representatives from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The agenda included questions related to the more efficient organization of citizenship granting processes, the improvement of existing legal regulations, and addressing ongoing issues in the sector. Arpine Sargsyan emphasized the need to reassess the institution of citizenship, highlighting the importance of ensuring a stable legal connection between individuals receiving citizenship and the Republic of Armenia.

“We are reevaluating the procedures for granting and revoking citizenship and placing a new approach to the dynamics of state-citizen relations at the core of our logic. All the solutions we develop should be based on the understanding that we must ensure a new quality in state-citizen relations,” the Minister stated.

Proposals aimed at revising and improving the processes of obtaining, restoring citizenship, and related procedures were presented. The potential for enhancing legal requirements and existing mechanisms, as well as solutions aimed at addressing the challenges that have emerged in the sector, were discussed, with the goal of aligning Armenia's legal and practical peculiarities with international best practices.

The Minister of Internal Affairs instructed that the package resulting from the discussion be finalized and presented for public discussion.
