Aliyev Announces Plan to Establish International Consortium for the 'Zangezur Corridor'
The Zangezur Corridor project is actively being promoted within Azerbaijani territory. During the third session of the high-level intergovernmental council of Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, President Ilham Aliyev announced that the works on the project in the main part of the country are expected to be completed next year, while they have already commenced in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
According to him, Baku’s position is that the railway line in Nakhchivan should become part of Azerbaijan’s railway system. In this context, it is planned to form an international consortium for the states and companies willing to participate in the project, invest, reap profits, and simultaneously secure guaranteed volumes of transportation along this highway.
Aliyev also noted that work is being done within the territory of Armenia. According to him, the Azerbaijani side is regularly informed about this by American partners. “According to the information we have received, construction works in Armenian territory will start either at the end of this year or at the beginning of next year. However, the length of the railway there is only 42 kilometers, while in the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, it is 194 kilometers. Therefore, we have already begun work and will ensure they are completed,” the Azerbaijani president said.
Aliyev added that there is an opportunity to participate in the newly established international consortium if various companies show interest in the project.
