Brazil's President Informs Trump That New Tariffs Are Groundless
Brazil's presidential press service has reported that Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva informed U.S. President Donald Trump about the groundless nature of the tariffs imposed on his country. The telephone conversation between the leaders took place on Friday.
“Regarding the recent implementation of new tariffs... President Lula da Silva emphasized that the accusations made against Brazil are groundless. Noting that the tariffs negatively impact both Brazil and the U.S., he stated that continuing negotiations is the best option for both countries,” the statement read.
Lula da Silva underscored the importance of cooperation between the states. Trump agreed on the necessity of maintaining strong trade ties and suggested that delegations from both countries should meet as soon as possible.
The U.S. has decided to impose tariffs of 25% on an entire range of goods from the South American nation. The Brazilian government has announced the initiation of procedures to implement the law of economic reciprocity, which entails retaliatory measures.
