Trump Threatens NATO
The North Atlantic Alliance faces a dire future if member states do not assist the United States in the unblocking of the Hormuz Strait, announced U.S. President Donald Trump in an interview with the British Financial Times.
"If there is no response to the call to join efforts in the Hormuz Strait, or if the response is negative, I think it will have a very bad impact on NATO's future," said the White House leader.
"We have something called NATO. We have been very kind. We should not have helped them on the Ukraine issue. Ukraine is thousands of kilometers away. But we helped. Now we will see if they will help us or not. Because I have said for a long time that we are ready to help them, but they are not ready to be with us," Trump stated.
He added that he is interested in any type of assistance, including sending demining ships to the region. The American leader also hinted that special operations forces from European countries could be used to eliminate Iranian forces launching drones or laying mines in the Persian Gulf.
"We are hitting them very hard. They have no other option but to create a little trouble in the strait, but these people are taking advantage of navigation in the Hormuz Strait, and they must help us maintain order," Trump said.
The White House leader emphasized that NATO should not be a "one-way street." He also argued that member countries would face minimal risk if warships are sent to the Hormuz Strait, as Iran's military capabilities have reportedly been effectively destroyed.
