CIA Director Warns Russia During Moscow Visit: Possible Purpose of the Visit Revealed

The primary purpose of CIA Director John Ratcliffe's visit to Moscow was to warn Russia against potential actions against NATO countries. This was reported by CBS News, citing American officials.

According to the latest assessments from American intelligence, officials in Washington believe that Russia may be preparing for cyberattacks, hybrid actions, and other operations against NATO territories. American officials suggest that the aim may not be to initiate direct war with NATO but to test the alliance's unity and the willingness of the Donald Trump administration to defend its allies.

The Wall Street Journal had previously reported that Ratcliffe's visit might also be related to intelligence data received by the U.S. regarding Russia’s potential military mobilization preparations. Sources from the publication indicated that this referred to early preparatory steps for possible mobilization for the war against Ukraine, as well as plans to test NATO's resolve.

Analysts have not ruled out that the CIA director may meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his time in Moscow to convey Washington's warning. According to CBS News, Ratcliffe also discussed the situation regarding Iran during his negotiations with the Russian side, warning of the possibility of additional sanctions if the Strait of Hormuz does not reopen for navigation.

Amid concerns from the U.S., recent incidents in Europe have also been mentioned, including reports of Russian drones entering Romanian airspace and a Russian missile crossing into Polish territory, along with alleged diversions and cyberattacks.

A Ukrainian official informed CBS News that Kyiv had been notified in advance of the American delegation's visit to Moscow. The American side also requested that Ukraine refrain from striking into Russian territory during the visit.

Information about Ratcliffe’s visit emerged after a U.S. Air Force Boeing C-17A Globemaster III transport plane and a convoy of American diplomats were spotted at the Moscow airport.

The last known visit by a CIA director to Russia occurred in November 2021, when then-CIA Director William Burns warned Russian officials in Moscow that the U.S. had information about preparations for a large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
