More than 570 Missing After Flooding in Nepal

More than 570 people are considered missing following devastating flooding in Nepal, with over 400 of them being foreigners. This was reported by Reuters, citing local authorities.

According to the latest data, the death toll from the natural disaster has reached 162. The disaster occurred near the border with China. The powerful water currents were caused by a sudden rise in the water level of the Bhote Koshi River, which originates from the Tibetan mountains.

At least four Russian citizens were also in the flood-affected area. The disaster struck the "Girong" ("Czilun") border checkpoint located in the Shigatse City District of Tibet Autonomous Region. According to Chinese media, three people have died there, and search operations for another 558 individuals are ongoing.

Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal stated that the cause of the disaster was an earthquake followed by landslides. Experts also do not rule out that the flooding could have been triggered by the bursting of a glacial lake.
