The Ban on Sig Fishing Continues: Water Patrols Implement Enhanced Services
From November 20 to February 1, sig fishing is prohibited in Lake Sevan. The water patrol unit of the Patrol Service in the Gegharkunik region is actively combating violations of this ban. This was reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs Police.
“Let’s summarize the results of their recent activities in this direction. On December 11, around 9:45 AM, water patrols discovered two fishing boats in the coastal area between the villages of Karchaghbyur and Tsovak, which were moved to a protected special area.
On December 12, around 6:30 AM, the unit’s officers stopped an 'Opel Astra' vehicle driven by a resident of Gavar city on the 52nd km of the Yerevan-Sevan-Ijevan highway. Approximately 57 kg of 155 sig fish were found in the trunk. The driver and the vehicle were taken to the Sevan division of the Community Police.
On December 14, at around 11:25 AM, water patrols stopped a 'VAZ 2109' vehicle driven by another Gavar resident on the 58th km of the highway. During the inspection, more than 10 kg of fish spawn was discovered. The man was taken along with his vehicle to the Sevan division of the Community Police.
On the same day, in the same area, patrol officers stopped another 'Opel' driven by another resident of Gavar, in which more than two kilograms of fish spawn were found. The driver was also taken to the Sevan division.
On December 15, around 1:30 AM, the unit’s officers discovered and apprehended a resident of Tsovagyugh suspected of illegal fishing in the Tsovagyugh-Shorja area. His inflatable boat contained 40 sig fish and 9 carp fish.
The enhanced patrol service continues. The fishing ban is not simply a matter of regulation. Therefore, we urge our citizens engaged in fishing to wait until the prohibition on sig fishing is lifted. By doing so, you will not only avoid administrative or criminal liability but also contribute to the sustainable recovery of fish stocks in Lake Sevan.”
