Trump Cancels Trade Negotiations with Canada
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that all trade negotiations with Canada have been halted. "All trade negotiations with Canada have been suspended due to their intolerable behavior," Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform.
The reason for this action stems from what he described as a "fake" advertisement displayed in Canada regarding tariffs established by former President Ronald Reagan. Ontario Premier Doug Ford mentioned earlier this week that the advertisement had caught Trump's attention.
The ad featured Republican Reagan criticizing tariffs on foreign goods, stating that they lead to job losses and trade wars. "I’ve heard that the President has seen our ad. I’m sure he wasn’t too happy about it," Ford said on Tuesday.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters that Canada will not allow U.S. access to its markets if negotiations for different trade agreements with Washington fail. Next year, the U.S., Canada, and Mexico are set to review their 2020 continental free trade agreement.
