How Much Money is Sweden Willing to Pay Migrants to Return?
The Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, has informed Euronews that there is an absolute necessity to control migration. He proposed to significantly increase the amount offered by Sweden to migrants as a financial incentive to leave the country.
Currently, the grant stands at €900 per adult. However, so far, this initiative has had limited success. According to the Swedish Migration Agency, only one out of 70 applications has been approved in 2023. To reverse this trend, the new government proposal would raise the amount to €32,000, representing a 3,400% increase.
Although the concept of financial incentives for voluntary return has existed for decades, Kristersson stated that he is now inspired by Denmark, which has set a target group of 22,000 people. “We are essentially replicating the Danish model and significantly increasing this amount to ease the lives of those who realize they would prefer to return to their homeland, but for various reasons do not believe they will be happy in Sweden,” he said.
