Armenia Receives Azerbaijan's Submitted Claim
On February 12, 2025, Armenia received the claim submitted by Azerbaijan in the arbitration case initiated under the Bern Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, dating back to 1979. This information was provided by the Office of the Representative for International Legal Affairs.
It was noted that this follows the procedural calendar established by the arbitration tribunal, with the first procedural hearing set for April 12, 2024, during which several favorable decisions were made for the Republic of Armenia.
“Armenia will continue to resolutely defend its position in this proceeding. Azerbaijan's legal stance is based on a misinterpretation and application of the Bern Convention that does not align with its goals and subject matter, which aim to promote cooperation among states for the conservation of wild flora and fauna and their natural habitats. Contrary to Azerbaijan's claims, reports from the UN Environment Program and other independent bodies actually testify that Azerbaijan is responsible for the environmental damage incurred in recent years. Armenia will dismiss Azerbaijan's unfounded demands, including claims for compensation,” the statement highlighted.
Since becoming a member state of the Bern Convention, Armenia has consistently adhered to its commitment to preserve the region’s wildlife and environment. This is reflected in both Armenia's environmental policy and its active engagement in the work of the Permanent Committee of the Bern Convention.
