Major Scandal in the Russian Opposition Camp
A major scandal is brewing in the Russian opposition landscape. Alexei Navalny's team has announced that another opposition figure, Mikhail Khodorkovsky's associate, the well-known businessman Leonid Nevzlin, orchestrated an attack on activist Leonid Volkov in Vilnius. Navalny's team has also accused Nevzlin of organizing and financing an attack on another opposition activist, economist Maxim Mironov, and his wife in Buenos Aires.
On March 12 of this year, an unknown assailant attacked Volkov with a hammer in Vilnius, but the opposition figure managed to put up adequate resistance. Following the incident, Volkov stated that the attack bore the hallmark of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In reality, more than six months after the incident, Volkov essentially confirms that Putin is not connected to the attack against him.
It’s worth noting that Navalny's team has presented quite serious evidence regarding Nevzlin's organization of these attacks. The emerging scandal is, in turn, a direct blow to the Russian opposition. We might state that key opposition figures are battling not only against Putin's regime but also against forces operating on the same level. This situation, undoubtedly, is particularly advantageous for the President of Russia.
