VIDEO: 39 Dead Due to Flooding in Brazil
In southern Brazil, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, heavy flooding has resulted in the deaths of 39 people, with an additional 68 reported missing. Since the beginning of the week, relentless heavy rains have affected more than 350,000 individuals in the region. Tens of thousands of residents have abandoned their homes and are currently in shelters.
According to Brazil's geological service, this is the most severe flooding recorded in over 80 years. In some cities, water levels have reached their highest in approximately 150 years of observation.
Brazilian media reported that on Friday evening, the Guaíba River reached its highest historical level at 4.77 meters. By Saturday morning, the river's maximum height peaked at 4.79 meters.
