Targeting of Journalists and Visible Incidents of Violence Are Unacceptable: Ombudsman
The Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan expresses serious concern regarding recent incidents that obstruct the professional activities of representatives of mass media, as well as cases of targeting and overt violence against them. This is stated in a statement issued by the Ombudsman's office.
“As part of ongoing monitoring conducted by the Ombudsman’s office, contact has been made with representatives of the media to obtain additional information regarding the incidents cited. Clarifications have also been requested from the competent authorities, and the Human Rights Defender has demanded a proper investigation of the cases mentioned.”
There are several issues related to the adequate guarantee of journalists’ professional activities that have also been addressed in the Ombudsman’s annual report. The Defender will be consistent in seeking solutions to these problems.
The Human Rights Defender emphasizes that the protected and effective work of journalists and media outlets is of great public importance. Targeting of journalists and incidents of overt violence in connection to their professional activities are unacceptable, and competent bodies must appropriately address any case that may indicate an obstruction of a journalist's professional activities,” the statement reads.
