The US Condemns Belarusian Elections
The US State Department has condemned the parliamentary elections in Belarus.
“The United States condemns the fraudulent parliamentary and local elections in Belarus conducted by Lukashenko's regime. These elections took place in an atmosphere of fear, where no electoral process can be considered democratic. The regime continues to hold more than 1,400 political prisoners. All independent political figures have either been imprisoned or exiled. The registration of all independent parties has been denied. Belarusian citizens living abroad could only vote if they returned to Minsk, where they would likely face retribution. These abuses have effectively frozen genuine political activity and discourse within Belarus. The regime has prevented an OSCE monitoring mission from visiting, further restricting the transparency that is essential for free and fair elections,” stated US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
“The United States again calls on Lukashenko's regime to end the repression, release all political prisoners, and initiate dialogue with its political opponents. The people of Belarus deserve better,” the statement reads.
