Marukyan Reveals Significant Facts About the Khojaly Events
The Special Representative of the Republic of Armenia, Edmon Marukyan, has published original evidence from a 1992 interview with Azerbaijan's first president, Ayaz Mutalibov, which appeared in the Russian newspaper "Nezavisimaya Gazeta."
Mutalibov stated that "the attack on Khojaly was not a surprise attack." In the interview, he emphasized that "the Armenians left a corridor for people to escape." However, he later confirmed that the column of civilians was fired upon by armed units of the Azerbaijan Popular Front near the border of the Aghdam region. He attributed this criminal act to attempts by the opposition to remove him from power and placed full blame on his opponents.
In another interview with the Russian magazine "Novoye Vremya," Mutalibov stated that "the shooting of Khojaly residents was obviously organized by someone in order to take control of Azerbaijan."
