U.S. Troops May Soon Leave Syria, According to Foreign Policy
U.S. authorities are considering the complete withdrawal of their troops from Syria. As reported by Foreign Policy (FP) magazine, citing four sources from the Pentagon and State Department, no final decision has been made regarding this issue. However, according to the publication's sources, the White House is no longer interested in extending the mission's timeframe, as reported by RTVI.
FP's sources indicate that "the White House is no longer investing in its mission, which it considers unviable," as the Biden administration reassesses U.S. military policy in the region following the Hamas attack on Israel.
The publication notes that the possible withdrawal of American troops from Syria could "trigger chaos and a rapid rise in terrorist threats" and would be a "gift" for the Islamic State. Despite significant weakening, the group is reportedly prepared to resurrect itself in Syria if given the opportunity.
According to the publication, there are approximately 900 American service members in Syria, and the United States plays a crucial role in containing Daesh in the country's northeast, collaborating with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
A senior Pentagon official, speaking on condition of anonymity, called the information regarding the U.S. considering withdrawal from Syria unreliable.
