Russia Appeals to UN Security Council for Urgent Meeting on IL-76 Crash
The Russian Federation has appealed to the UN Security Council to convene an urgent meeting regarding the crash of an IL-76 aircraft in the Belgorod region. According to reports from Armenpress citing Lenta.ru, this was announced by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
He expressed hope that the French presidency would not follow the example of the UK, which rejected a similar proposal from Russia during its presidency in April 2022, and will indeed hold the urgent meeting.
Lavrov also emphasized that Ukraine could discuss the details of the IL-76 crash during the extraordinary meeting convened by Russia at the UN Security Council.
On the morning of the incident, a military transport IL-76 aircraft crashed in the Belgorod region while carrying 65 Ukrainian soldiers, along with six crew members and three accompanying individuals. The military personnel were being transported for a prisoner exchange. Regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reported that all passengers on board perished. The Russian side holds the Ukrainian armed forces responsible for the crash.
