Azerbaijan Responds to French Senate's Resolution on Sanctions Against Baku
The Parliament of Azerbaijan has issued a statement in response to the French Senate's resolution regarding sanctions against Baku. Azerbaijani media report that Baku calls for sanctions against France and the cessation of economic ties, freezing the assets of French officials in Azerbaijan, prohibiting French companies from participating in state-funded projects, and expelling all French companies from the country, including Total. Additionally, the statement directs the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan to take steps towards recognizing the independence of Corsica and Kanak.
On January 17, the French Senate discussed a resolution condemning Azerbaijan's military aggression in Nagorno-Karabakh and urging prevention of further attempts against the Armenian Republic and violation of its territorial integrity. The resolution emphasizes that the international community must demand Azerbaijan to ensure the right of the Armenian population to return to Nagorno-Karabakh while also securing their safety and welfare.
On January 17, the French Senate adopted a resolution imposing sanctions against Azerbaijan regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh issue. 336 members of the Senate voted in favor, with only 1 opposing vote.
The Senate calls on the French government to demand Azerbaijan release civilian and military personnel held there, including unlawfully detained political and civic leaders, and former officials from Artsakh. Furthermore, the Senate reaffirms the inviolability of Armenia's territorial integrity and calls for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Azerbaijani forces from Armenian sovereign territory.
It demands severe measures, including confiscation of the assets of Azerbaijani leaders and an embargo on the import of Azerbaijani gas and oil.
