The Winning Candidate in Taiwan's Presidential Elections Speaks on Relations with the PRC
The candidate from Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party, Lai Ching-te, has won the country’s presidential elections. According to RIA Novosti, Lai expressed his gratitude to the people of Taiwan for helping to write a new chapter in their democracy. "We have shown the world how much we value democracy," he stated to his supporters.
Regarding relations with China, Lai Ching-te emphasized that Taiwan genuinely seeks dialogue with the mainland, "if it is based on equality." He also noted his intention to maintain the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, using dialogue to replace confrontation, and vowed to defend the island from China’s "threats and intimidation." Furthermore, Lai expressed support for deepening ties with Washington.
He thanked his opponents as well, stating that he had spoken with them over the phone and accepted their congratulations.
It should be reminded that earlier reports indicated elections were taking place in Taiwan.
