Surat Huseynov, who organized a coup in Azerbaijan 30 years ago, has died. The former Prime Minister of Azerbaijan passed away due to stomach hemorrhage, a consequence of a severe and protracted illness.
Huseynov felt unwell at Istanbul Airport and was hospitalized. He died on July 31 at a hospital in Istanbul at the age of 64.
It is worth noting that Surat Huseynov participated in the First Nagorno-Karabakh War and was awarded the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan. In 1993, he led an armed coup in Ganja, which resulted in the ousting of President Abulfaz Elchibey. After taking power in Baku, Heydar Aliyev appointed Huseynov as Prime Minister in 1993.
In October 1994, he initiated another rebellion. President Aliyev accused him of activities against the state. Huseynov was removed from his position as Prime Minister and stripped of his title of National Hero. He moved to Russia and was later extradited.
In Azerbaijan, he was sentenced to life imprisonment, but was later pardoned. Recently, he had been in Turkey for medical treatment.
