Russian State Duma Raises Reserve Age by 5 Years

The State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation has approved a law raising the reserve age by five years for certain citizens with military ranks during its final reading.

The bill was introduced for discussion last November by the chairman of the Duma's Defense Committee, Andrei Kartapolov.

According to the new law, the age limit for responsible individuals belonging to the first category of officers and non-commissioned officers is increased from 35 to 40 years. For the second category, it rises from 45 to 50 years, and for the third category, from 50 to 55 years.

Additionally, the age limit for reserve servicemen in mobilization reserve is also raised. For senior officers, this will be set at 65 years (currently it is 60 years in many cases), for junior officers it will be 60 years (currently 55 years), and for other ranks, 55 years (currently 45 years).

The limit for senior officers of the reserve will remain 70 years for mobilization reserve purposes. The new regulations will come into effect on January 1, 2024. The law will establish a transition period until January 1, 2028, during which citizens registered in the reserve will gradually transition to retirement.
