Excavations at Yeritsvank Reveal New Secrets

The first phase of archaeological excavations at the Yeritsvank monastery complex in the Kapan community of the Syunik province has concluded. As a result of the work, new data has been obtained regarding the history of the ancient complex.

Archaeologists worked in the area of the Church of St. Stephen the Protomartyr at Yeritsvank during July and August. The results of the excavations have confirmed previous hypotheses that in the 10th-11th centuries, Yeritsvank was likely surrounded by double fortifications and transformed into an impregnable fortress.

Archaeological studies have also provided insights into the complex's further development. In the 12th-13th centuries, a two-story chapel-tomb was constructed in the northern part of Yeritsvank.

According to tradition, the Yeritsvank was founded by Bishop Yeritsak of Syunik in the late 5th century or early 6th century. Although the first phase of the excavations has already concluded, the study of the discovered artifacts continues. Archaeologists are working to clarify their history, chronology, and significance.

Simultaneously, efforts are underway for the preservation and restoration of the monastery complex. A project for the restoration of the larger church is being prepared, while restoration work on the smaller church is set to begin soon.
