US State Department Authorizes Sanctions Against Georgian Authorities

The US State Department has authorized sanctions against the Georgian authorities due to the foreign agents law. State Department spokesperson Ned Price announced that the US does not rule out the possibility of applying sanctions against the Georgian authorities concerning the situation created by the foreign agents law.

“I will not mention specific individuals or entities that may be subject to US or other sanctions. But we have a range of tools that allow us to hold accountable anyone responsible for human rights abuses in any country around the world,” said Ned Price during a briefing.

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili has expressed support for the protesters and promised to veto the law. On the night of March 8, protesters breached barricades set up by the police near the Georgian parliament and entered the courtyard, prompting police to use water cannons and tear gas.
