EU Supports Georgia as Mediator in Armenia-Azerbaijan Negotiations

The EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia, Toivo Klaar, has announced that Brussels supports Georgia's mediating efforts in the negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Klaar stated during an interview on Georgian First Channel that it is very important for the three countries of the South Caucasus to work together and contribute to peace, emphasizing the significance of Georgia's position as a bridge between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The diplomat added that during a meeting in Tbilisi with the Prime Minister of Georgia, they discussed the steps that have already been taken in this direction. "I hope that in the future, cooperation in this regard between the European Union and Georgia, as well as between the European Union and the three states of the South Caucasus, will be even greater," Klaar said.

He recalled the meeting of the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Tbilisi last summer, noting that Georgia's capital can still be used for high-level meetings in various formats.

"Geographically, Georgia is very convenient; it is easy and quick to reach from neighboring countries. Moreover, it makes sense that the three countries located in the same region—the South Caucasus—should try to find areas for cooperation. For example, transportation, energy, environmental protection, and other issues," the EU special representative added.
