Khachanov on the Hysteria Raised by Azerbaijan Regarding His Camera Message and His Armenian Roots
Russian-Armenian tennis player Karen Khachanov, after reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open, spoke at a press conference about his visit to Armenia and his impressions, as well as responded to questions regarding his message written on the camera.
“I know nothing about any demands to prohibit or punish me. No one has forbidden me from writing on the camera. I have repeatedly mentioned that I have Armenian roots and wanted to support my people with those messages. I have visited Armenia multiple times; I have relatives there. I simply didn't visit Armenia when I was younger due to my busy schedule. I couldn't find the time. But in 2021, we decided to change our vacation plans and went with my wife and son. We went for about 10 or 12 days, visited not only Yerevan but traveled around the entire country, saw sights, and visited various monasteries. I got to know the country better.
In the end, we also held a master class. I was very surprised by how many children showed up, as it was all spontaneous. It happened on the same day it was announced, and people came from all over the country. There were 300-400 children. I was astonished by how much they wanted to see me in Armenia. It was pleasant,” Khachanov said.
Yesterday, after exiting the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, Khachanov again wrote on the camera to express his support for Artsakh. He wrote on the camera: “Keep believing all the way until the end! Artsakh Stay Strong.” It is noteworthy that he had also made a similar statement after his previous match.
