Karen Andreasian Now Also Imposes Restrictions on Journalists as Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council
According to "Zhoghovurd" daily, former Armenian Minister of Justice Karen Andreasian, known for his disgraceful remarks comparing journalists to mercenaries, is now attempting to fight against journalists in his capacity as the Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council.
The issue arose when the Supreme Judicial Council's press service announced yesterday morning that there would be a general assembly of judges. Many journalists, including a representative from "Zhoghovurd" daily, arrived to cover the meeting and speak with the judges. However, they faced an unpleasant surprise; access to the assembly was denied, and the judges entered through different entrances to avoid any interaction with the press.
As a result, journalists were forced to wait outside in the cold either in the courtyard of the Armenia Marriott hotel or near the back entrance. In essence, the Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council both invites journalists to cover an event and imposes restrictions, leaving them outside, inspired perhaps by the image of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
It is noteworthy that on August 6, 2021, during a conversation with journalists, then-Minister of Justice Karen Andreasian stated his support for the restrictions concerning journalists in the National Assembly, arguing that “in the case of free movement, there could be mercenaries who might also disguise themselves as journalists, and we must protect ourselves even from such individuals; therefore, I believe we should rely on security forces.”
