Çavuşoğlu Warns Sweden
The Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu has stated that Ankara will not support Sweden's accession to NATO until Stockholm takes "decisive measures" against the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which is recognized as a terrorist organization in Turkey. Çavuşoğlu made this statement during a broadcast on TRT television.
The minister noted that the Kurdistan Workers' Party is "a landmine under Sweden's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance." He emphasized, "If the Swedish government does not respond properly to such actions, we will not give the answer that Sweden expects regarding its NATO membership. Sweden must make its choice."
The Turkish Foreign Minister mentioned that Ankara expects Stockholm to fulfill the memorandum signed regarding combating the activities of terrorist organizations. This enforcement is Turkey's condition for approving Sweden's NATO membership. The document was signed during last year's Madrid summit in June.
