Western Misguided Policies Cause Humanitarian Disaster in Syria: Damascus
The misguided policies of several Western countries have led to a humanitarian disaster in Syria, said Bassam Sabbagh, Syria's ambassador to the UN.
He stated, "These countries are trying to mislead public opinion by claiming their desire to support humanitarian actions for Syrians." He pointed out that the United States, the United Kingdom, and France are responsible for the failure of UN resolution 2858.
Sabbagh expressed regret that a balanced draft resolution on Syria proposed by Russia was not accepted.
"Damascus strongly condemns the claims of the 'Eurogroup' countries to distort facts, continue to politicize humanitarian action, and obstruct the genuine efforts to reduce the suffering of Syrian citizens," the diplomat emphasized.
He noted that Syria pays special attention to humanitarian issues and makes every effort to meet the humanitarian needs of the Syrian people and address their problems.
During a UN Security Council meeting, Russia vetoed a draft resolution by Ireland and Norway to extend the operation of the Bab al-Hawa crossing for one year for humanitarian aid to Syria. Russia voted against, while all other Security Council members voted in favor, with China abstaining.
The draft resolution prepared by Ireland and Norway proposed extending the operation of the crossing from July 10, 2023, to January 10, 2024, and then automatically for another six months.
Russia prepared an alternative draft proposing to extend the operation of the crossing for six months until January 10, 2024. After that, an additional Security Council resolution would be required to expand its activities. Western countries also vetoed Moscow's draft resolution.
