Construction of the First Railway Bridge Connecting China and Russia Completed
On August 17, seven years after the start of construction, a new bridge linking the railway systems of China and Russia has been completed. According to CNN, the bridge connects the city of Tongjiang in China with the Russian settlement of Nizhneleninskoye on the bank of the Amur River. This means that China’s northern railway network can now connect with Russia’s Trans-Siberian Railway.
The bridge spans 2,215 meters over the river. Construction began on both sides in February 2014. Although the majority of the bridge was completed in 2019, the final section of the track was only placed in August of this year. Most of the bridge (1,886 meters) is located in China.
This bridge is the latest project undertaken within China’s “Belt and Road Initiative,” which aims to connect infrastructure across the Eurasian region. It is noted that the bridge will enable the transport of up to 21 million tons of cargo annually.
