At Least 38 Killed in 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake in Indonesia

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck eastern Indonesia, leading to the deaths of at least 38 people. This was reported by the BBC, referencing the country's disaster mitigation agency (BNPB).

The earthquake occurred early Saturday morning on Flores Island. The epicenter of the tremor was located at a depth of 15 kilometers. The main shock was followed by dozens of aftershocks, one of which registered a magnitude of 6.1.

Residential houses and various buildings were damaged due to the earthquake. Large sections of concrete were torn off the terminal building at Maumere port, and some individuals fell into the sea following the collapse of a passage to the harbor.

Authorities issued a tsunami warning, which was canceled about three hours later after no significant rise in sea levels was recorded. Approximately 2,000 people were evacuated or moved to safer locations independently.

Preliminary reports indicate that at least 54 houses, five health facilities, three places of worship, six government buildings, one educational institution, and a warehouse were severely damaged.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing, and authorities are still assessing the full impact of the disaster.
