Gunfire Heard in Gegharkunik Border Area: Azerbaijani Commander Apologizes to Armenian Side
On May 20, an incident occurred involving Azerbaijani military personnel crossing into the territory of the Republic of Armenia in the border area of Gegharkunik Province, as reported by the Ministry of Defense of Armenia.
“Around 3:00 PM, several dozen shots were fired, presumably into the air, after which Armenian units opened warning fire. The commander of the Azerbaijani military established contact with the commander of the Armenian unit, requested a ceasefire, apologized, and stated that the gunfire was a result of coincidence,” the Ministry of Defense's report stated.
The armed forces of the Republic of Armenia warn that the recurrence of such incidents will be regarded as a deliberate attempt to escalate tensions and will lead to corresponding actions from the Armenian side.
