3000 People Arrested During Protests Against Lukashenko in Belarus

Approximately three thousand people have been arrested during unauthorized protests that erupted following the presidential elections in Belarus, reports .gazeta.ru, citing the spokesperson of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Olga Chemodanova.

“In total, around three thousand people have been arrested across the country for participating in unauthorized mass events,” Chemodanova stated. She also noted that one thousand of those arrested are in Minsk, while the rest are in other cities.

Following the presidential elections held on August 9, unauthorized protests began in several cities in Belarus, during which police used tear gas and stun grenades. According to preliminary election results, the incumbent president, Alexander Lukashenko, who has ruled the country for 26 years, received 80.23% of the votes.
