Constitutional Court Members to Retire Early: President Signs Legislative Package

The Office of the President of the Republic of Armenia reports that President Armen Sarkissian signed several laws on December 26. Among other legislative acts, he also signed a package of laws regarding amendments to the constitutional law on the Constitutional Court and an addition to the law on the provision of functions, service, and social guarantees for officials.

It is recalled that earlier, the National Assembly of Armenia had adopted, in its second reading and in full, the draft law on implementing an early retirement system for judges of the Constitutional Court, with 75 votes in favor and 34 against. The draft was then sent for presidential approval.

The proposed amendments, drafted by the Government of Armenia, stipulate that if Constitutional Court judges, including the President Hrayr Tovmasyan, resign by January 31, 2020, they will receive a pension equivalent to their salary until the end of their term in office.
