Erdogan's Remarks on the Armenian Genocide are Shameful: Turkish Politician

Turkish politician Ceylan Özgül gave an interview to the Russian television channel "360". He deemed President Erdogan's opinion, that there should be an equal sign placed between the 1915 crimes of the Ottoman Empire and the extermination of Native Americans by the United States, as shameful, according to Rusarminfo.

Özgül noted that unlike Ankara, which shies away from discussions about its crimes, the White House has publicly raised the issue of the genocide of Native Americans, apologized, and compensated for its actions.

In addition, according to Özgül, there are no large communities of Native Americans left in America that can continually voice their issues. He pointed out that the Armenian diaspora is incomparably larger; specifically, there are more than 3 million people living in Armenia, and around 10 million representatives of the Armenian ethnic group scattered around the world.

"For this reason, this is one of the most shameful acts by a president in Turkey's history," Özgül said.

It is noteworthy that previously the U.S. Senate unanimously recognized the Armenian Genocide. This did not sit well with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who subsequently issued threats against the United States, sparking significant uproar in Turkey.
