Makuц Responds to Serge Sargsyan's Charges, Denies Political Persecution Claims

The charges brought against third President of Armenia, Serge Sargsyan, are not a political persecution, said Lilith Makunts, head of the My Step faction in the Armenian National Assembly, during a press briefing with journalists.

In response to the statement made by the Vice President of the Republican Party of Armenia, Armen Ashotyan, who claimed that the criminal case against Serge Sargsyan is baseless, Makunts said, “The attempt to label everything as political persecution is simply unacceptable.”

She noted that on the same day charges were brought against Serge Sargsyan, a Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, Gevorg Lorentsyan, was also accused of involvement in corrupt activities, which demonstrates that there is no leniency in the fight against corruption, regardless of whether it concerns representatives of the opposition or allies.
