Criminal Case Initiated at the Special Investigative Service for Police Torture Incident

Recently, a video circulated on the internet showing police officers using violence has led to the initiation of a criminal case in the Special Investigative Service.

This was reported to Auroranews by the press secretary of the Special Investigative Service, Marina Ohanyan. According to her, the criminal case was launched under Article 309, Part 2 of the RA Criminal Code, which pertains to the use of violence, weapons, or special means to abuse official powers.

It is worth reminding that the aforementioned video, titled ‘Police Extracting Testimonies with Tear Gas and Batons’, appeared online on November 21. The age of the video and the identities of the individuals involved are still unknown.

From the Police Information Service, we learned that based on the video, checks were initiated in the Internal Security Department of the Police under the instructions of Acting Police Chief Arman Sargsyan.

Later, Gohar Abrahamyan, an advisor to the Prosecutor General, also reacted, stating that the video showing alleged instances of violence by police officers against an individual has become the subject of investigation immediately after its availability. As a result, both the video and the relevant media publication have been forwarded to the RA Special Investigative Service in accordance with Articles 180-181 of the RA Criminal Procedure Code (Procedures for Discussing Reports of Crimes and the Decisions Made Therefrom) to prepare materials and determine the course of action.
