Three Courts Confirm Absence of Reasonable Suspicion of Pressure on Constitutional Court Member by My Client: Armen Gevorgyan's Lawyer
The lawyer of former Deputy Prime Minister Armen Gevorgyan, Erik Aleksanyan, responded to questions from a Factinfo correspondent.
- Mr. Aleksanyan, today there was information in the press that during Robert Kocharian's presidency, there were instances of pressure on the courts. Specifically, the case of pressure on Constitutional Court member Valeri Poghosyan in 2008 was mentioned, which is described in one of the Wikileaks publications. How can you comment on this information? In that regard, Armen Gevorgyan was also charged at the beginning of the investigation.
- We are aware of that publication on fip.am. It is strange that the authors of that publication have either forgotten or deliberately ignored two important circumstances. First, Valeri Poghosyan himself has repeatedly and publicly declared that he has not been pressured. He has asserted this in his testimonies given during the investigation as well. Second, all three courts have confirmed the absence of reasonable suspicion regarding my client's alleged pressure on the Constitutional Court member.
- Since the reference is again made to Wikileaks’ cables, we would like to know if you have discovered anything new regarding the legality of using those publications by the investigative bodies?
- Armen Gevorgyan himself recently commented on the situation in which the investigative bodies charged him based on the Wikileaks publications. There has been nothing new since that interview; we have officially approached the U.S. Embassy for comments and possible clarifications regarding this issue. We submitted our request on June 5, but we have not yet received a response to our letter.
