We Do Not See Elements of Political Persecution: LHK MPs on Kocharian's Trial
The trial of the second President of Armenia, Robert Kocharian, is not a routine case, but regardless of whether it involves a president or an ordinary citizen, equal opportunities for a fair trial must be guaranteed for everyone. This was stated by LHK MPs when answering journalists' questions today.
“We do not see elements of political persecution, and this case is purely a legal process for us,” said MP Ani Samsonyan.
Referring to the situation surrounding the Constitutional Court, Samsonyan noted that the current judge of the Constitutional Court, Hrayr Tovmasyan, is today considered a judge by all standards, and any individual interpretation of constitutional norms is unacceptable.
“[Vahe] Grigoryan came to the National Assembly and announced that from this moment he assumes the powers of the [President of the Constitutional Court], but as you can see, several days have passed and Mr. Grigoryan has not assumed those powers. If Mr. Grigoryan does not become the President of the Constitutional Court, I think he will face serious problems,” she said.
Another LHK MP, Karen Simonian, stated that Hrayr Tovmasyan was elected as the President of the Constitutional Court according to the accepted procedure, by a decision of the National Assembly and other relevant acts, and if Grigoryan considers those decisions disputable, he can challenge them in the administrative court.
