US Suspends Visa Application Process
The administration of President Donald Trump has suspended the visa application process worldwide as part of an initiative to tighten immigration policies. The State Department has announced that it has begun training staff at American embassies and consulates in various countries, and that work schedules will be adjusted to accommodate these processes.
The State Department did not clarify the details and timeline of the training, limiting itself to a statement that the purpose of the process is to assist consular officials in identifying applicants who may become dependent on government benefits provided by the U.S., as well as ensuring a thorough and consistent assessment of visa applicants.
Individuals scheduled for interviews at U.S. embassies and consulates for immigration visas have received emails informing them that their meetings are postponed and that they will be notified of a new date later.
Human rights organizations have criticized Trump's immigration policy, labeling it discriminatory and a violation of freedom of speech and due process rights. Advocates for rights have also noted that these measures have created an unsafe environment in the United States, especially for ethnic minorities.
The American administration has also complicated the legal immigration process by imposing new and costly fees on applicants for certain types of work visas. It is noteworthy that earlier reports indicated that the Trump administration was planning to cancel up to 200,000 visas.
