Video: Man Damages American Military Aircraft with Axe in Ireland
An unknown man invaded a secure area at Shannon Airport in Ireland and damaged a U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft with an axe. On the morning of April 11, the perpetrator climbed on the wing of the aircraft located in a remote parking area and struck the fuselage and wing.
Police officers used aviation mobile stairs to incapacitate the man, who was then arrested and taken into custody. The military aircraft sustained significant technical damage. Authorities are investigating how the individual was able to bypass the security system.
The incident caused operations at Shannon Airport to be halted for half an hour. Two flights were delayed, while one aircraft remained in the air until the runway was reopened. The airport is now functioning normally.
This is not the first incident of security breaches at Shannon; previous attempts of intrusions and damage to equipment have raised questions about the facility's security measures.
